John Fedchock and Ed Neumeister are a veteran trombonists out of New York, Pete Christlieb is a veteran tenor saxophonist from LA, and most of you are familiar with Rob Scheps at least by name, another great tenor player. MARCH 2007

Hi, everyone. Got a few firsts this month. I am now a permanent sub in the Russ Long Sextet (3/11), which I've never played in before; I'm filling in this once for Paul Smith in Horace Scope (3/21), and The Sam Wisman Quartet with Kevin Cerovich will debut 3/29 at Jardine's. Yes, that's Mrs. Cerovich's son. The Wisman Quartet will play "new standards" by composers including Sting, Radiohead, Paul McCartney, and Mike Andrews. Horace Scope exclusively plays the works of the great jazz composer/pianist, Horace Silver. 3/22 is probably the last of many performances by my quartet with trombonist Paul McKee, who will move to Tallahassee to teach jazz trombone @ FSU later this year.

Hi everyone, and welcome to winter and the holiday season! I've got some good gigs this month. On Sunday afternoon the 10th, I'll be playing a weird version of the Nutcracker in Brad Cox's big band (no dancers), and my daughter Lilah will be singing on one tune. That's across the street from Kemper Museum. Got my first gig with Gary Sivils that night. Also looking forward to the first gig with Gerald Spaits' trio with the great new drummer Brandon Draper on the 12th. And I'll also play publicly for the first time with the swinging New York saxophonist Dave Schnitter at the Blue Room on the 29th. I saw Dave in the 80's playing with Freddie Hubbard and with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (incl. Bobby Watson). Hope to see you at these events.

Well, it's summer for real now. If you can stand the heat, there are several outdoor gigs for me this month. Also, some nice stuff at the Blue Room, esp. the Westport Art Ensemble with the entire original cast including Todd Strait and Josh Sclar. Closing out the month is a memorial concert for Jim Monroe, the devoted jazz promoter in Topeka, featuring some nationally recognized guys such as Harry Allen, Tiger Okoshi, Bob Kindred, Gary Foster, Phil Wilson, Jennifer Leitham and Giacomo Gates.
